People ask kids all the time what they want to be when they grow up.
The answer to that for most kids changes pretty frequently.
Today I was reflecting on all the things
I remember wanting to be when I grew up.
When I was very little, like 3 or 4,
I used to tell people I wanted to change the world when I grew up.
I also remember telling people I wanted to be a philosopher
and even an entrepreneur when I was very young.
When I was in early elementary, I would tell people I wanted to be an artist.
Then a comic book artist.
Then my interests shifted to acting,
which I took classes for.
Then I decided I wanted to be a stand-up comedian.
When I told my Dad this he literally wrote me an entire book
on how to become a stand-up comedian. It was a great book.
At age 12, I changed my mind and decided I wanted to become a filmmaker.
When I told my dad this he bought me a camcorder to practice with.
I would practice sketch comedy in front of the camera for hours
and re-enact Monty Python skits. I still have the all the videotapes.
In high school, my interests shifted to painting and then to photography.
I ended up coming to WKU to study photojournalism.
While in school my interests shifted more to creative multimedia work and interactive design,
and I ended up completing my degree in photojournalism
with a concentration in new media publishing
and a minor in entrepreneurship.
As of recent, my interests have shifted more towards writing.
To recap, throughout my life I've wanted to become:
a writer,
a designer,
a multimedia producer,
a photojournalist,
a filmmaker,
a comedian,
an actor,
an artist,
an entrepreneur,
a philosopher,
and an 'activist' who could affect change all throughout the world.
I realized today that these are all things
which I am perfectly capable of doing with proficiency.
When I grow up, I want to be a jack of all trades.
I want to be a polymath.
